WHAT IS SPORTS Physical Therapy?
Sports Physical Therapy focuses on the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries related to sport and physical activity. It also considers the demands of returning safely to training, competition, and long-term participation.
You do not have to be an elite athlete to benefit. Sports Physical Therapy may be appropriate for student athletes, runners, lifters, recreational athletes, and active adults who want to recover well, reduce injury risk, and return to the activities they value.
Our goal is simple: help you recover, build resilience, and return to activity with confidence.

Our Sports Physical Therapy Approach
Get a Clear Plan
We identify what is limiting you, what your sport demands, and what needs to change so you can move forward with confidence.
Rebuild What Your Sport Requires
Your rehab is designed around strength, power, speed, mobility, endurance, and the specific demands of your position or event—not just getting you pain-free.
Train While You Recover
When appropriate, we help you maintain fitness and continue training the rest of your body while the injured area recovers.
Return Ready—not Just Cleared
We use objective testing and sport-specific progression to help determine whether you are prepared for practice, competition, and full performance.
Reduce the Risk of Reinjury
Before discharge, we address the movement, strength, workload, and performance factors that may increase your risk of the problem returning.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Sports Physical Therapy at S2S Functional Performance®?
Sports Physical Therapy at S2S Functional Performance® focuses on the evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries related to sport and physical activity. Our goal is to help athletes recover, rebuild strength and confidence, and safely return to training, competition, and long-term performance.
Who can benefit from Sports Physical Therapy services at S2S?
Sports Physical Therapy is appropriate for student, recreational, collegiate, and competitive athletes, as well as active adults recovering from injury or returning to higher-level activity. We work with runners, cyclists, lifters, field and court athletes, and others whose goals require strength, mobility, power, endurance, and confidence in movement.
Do you provide rehabilitation after sports-related orthopedic surgery?
Yes. We provide sports physical therapy following a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including ACL reconstruction, MPFL reconstruction, meniscus repair, hip labral repair, UCL reconstruction (Tommy John surgery), shoulder stabilization procedures, ankle ligament reconstruction, and other sports-related surgeries.
Our therapists work as part of a multidisciplinary care team, communicating and collaborating with orthopedic surgeons and other members of the athlete’s medical team throughout rehabilitation. We coordinate post-operative protocols, progression milestones, and return-to-sport criteria while rebuilding mobility, strength, power, speed, endurance, and sport-specific function. Objective testing helps guide return-to-sport decisions and progression back to full performance.
Why should an athlete choose a Sports Physical Therapy approach?
According to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS), Sports Physical Therapy includes specialized competencies in areas such as rehabilitation and return to activity, injury prevention, athlete safety, sports science, and sports performance.
At S2S Functional Performance®, we apply those principles to the athlete’s individual needs—considering strength, power, speed, mobility, endurance, workload, and the demands of their sport, position, or event. Our team includes clinicians with advanced sports and strength credentials, including SCS and CSCS, while our sports rehabilitation approach extends across the team.
How do you determine when an athlete is ready to return to sport?
Return-to-sport decisions are based on more than time or pain alone. We consider strength, mobility, power, endurance, movement quality, sport-specific demands, and objective functional testing to determine whether the athlete is progressing toward the requirements of practice and competition.
For post-operative athletes, we also coordinate with the surgeon and broader medical team so return-to-sport progression aligns with healing timelines, surgical protocols, and performance criteria.
Do you coordinate care with orthopedic surgeons and other members of the athlete’s medical team?
Yes. Multidisciplinary communication is part of our approach to sports rehabilitation. Our physical therapists coordinate with orthopedic surgeons and other members of the athlete’s medical team throughout the rehabilitation process.
For post-operative athletes, we communicate regarding surgical protocols, healing timelines, progression milestones, and return-to-sport criteria so the plan of care stays aligned from early rehabilitation through return to competition.
Do I need a referral to schedule a Sports Physical Therapy evaluation?
No referral? No problem. In Texas, qualifying physical therapists can begin treatment without a physician referral for up to 30 consecutive calendar days, as outlined by the Texas Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners.
Our goal is to make getting started simple. If your care needs to continue beyond that period, we’ll communicate with the appropriate healthcare provider and help coordinate the next step so your care stays connected and moving forward. Insurance plans may have their own referral or authorization requirements, and our team can help you understand those as well.
